According to research by Parks Associates, it is projected that more than two million households with broadband will have a self-monitored security system by the end of 2019. These do-it-yourself (DIY) security systems have the potential to cause some major shifts in the home security market.
Self-monitored security devices are all over the market. Consumers can find them from many different companies like ADT, AT&T, Ring, Comcast and even at chain hardware stores. Self-monitored security systems have become popular because they are easy to use, have low fees and include home control services.
With the dramatic increase of IoT devices in the home, consumers are seeing a new class of smarter security systems emerging on the market.
Artificial Intelligence is a term for various data analytics and Machine Learning refers to processes that give computers the ability to “learn” from that data collected. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have the ability to innovate home security systems. Security systems that are integrated with home automation services, such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Google Home Hub, the systems could perform actions independent of the users input. For example, the smart system could monitor activity in the house when home members are out in the yard. If a child were to run back into the house while the system is monitoring, the security cameras could quickly recognize that it is not an intruder and not sound the alarm.
Some of the other benefits of AI and ML in security systems are that they could reduce the number of false alarms, better detect activity, provide better video surveillance and detailed analytics among many other possibilities.
Not only will switching to AI and ML-based security systems and monitoring systems provide better performance metrics, it will improve the customer experience and interaction with these systems. This is because AI and ML-based systems can deliver better quality control, and user experience because of the data and analysis that can be collected and proactively acted upon.
Artificial Intelligence has the potential of truly creating a “smart home”. Not only can it learn the habits and choices of the people living within the house, but it can also proactively modify settings of the different systems it controls according to the home owner’s needs. Looking towards the future, AI and ML will continue to evolve and to create limitless possibilities to keep your home safe and to take home security to a whole new level.
